Nine kilometres north-west of Aix-en-Provence, Éguilles stands 271 metres up on a headland with sweeping views. Locals will tell you the ‘u’ is pronounced. The 17th-century château of the Boyer d’Éguilles family now houses the town hall, and the church of Saint-Julien sits at the heart of the village. The commune, about 3,400 hectares, also includes the hamlet of Les Figons with its chapel of Saint-Alexis, a few kilometres away.
