Old village, new hillside
Velaux has two faces. The old village, Provençal in character, clings to a rocky outcrop crowned by a medieval tower, looking out over the Étang de Berre and the Arc valley. Since 1978 a newer village has spread across the neighbouring hill, followed in the 2000s by the ‘hameaux de Velaux’. Wooded, rolling countryside and vine-covered slopes surround it all, between Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Salon-de-Provence.
Via Rognac on the D 20
From the airport it is 10 km by road, around 13 minutes. The D 20 runs through the commune, linking it to Rognac and Berre-l’Étang to the south, while the D 10 heads off towards Aix and Salon. The church of Saint-Trophime started life as a Protestant temple, one of only three in France built before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes that still stand.
