A village in a hollow, coves below

Ensuès village sits in a hollow, separated from the sea by the Graffiane plateau. Down on the Côte Bleue the commune has a string of calanques and small harbours: La Redonne, Les Figuières, Petit and Grand Méjean and the Madrague de Gignac. Around 80% of the land is garrigue scrub, much of it protected by the Conservatoire du littoral, which keeps the coves largely free of building.

D 5, then down the Graffiane valley

The drive is 13 km and takes around 18 minutes. The village is skirted by the D 5, which links up with the A55 and Carry-le-Rouet to the west. The coves themselves can only be reached by car along a side road that drops down the Graffiane valley and winds between the rocks. Fixed fares: €21 in Eco, €30 in a saloon, €50 in a van, tolls included.

Summer access to the coves

Like its neighbours, the Madrague de Gignac has restricted access at peak times, so book ahead and give the exact address of your rental. From the Madrague, a footpath leads to the Eaux-Salées cove and on to Carry-le-Rouet. The return to the airport is the same price, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Your driver tracks your flight, so a delay is never a problem.

Good to know about Ensuès-la-Redonne

La Redonne-Ensuès station, perched above the cove, reaches Marseille Saint-Charles in about 25 minutes along a scenic coastal line. The sea caves at Méjean can be reached on a coastal footpath from La Redonne. Robert Guédiguian filmed La Villa here.
