Eight thousand years by the water
Châteauneuf-les-Martigues stands on the southern shore of the Étang de Berre. Its Font-des-Pigeons rock shelter was lived in from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age and gave its name to a prehistoric culture, the Castelnovian; a museum now occupies the former Seytres-Caumont house. The town is small but busy with shops, and also has the Jean-Claude-Izzo cultural centre and the neo-Gothic church of Sainte-Cécile, consecrated in 1853.
Along the Bolmon marshes
The western half of the Étang de Bolmon and the Jaï sand spit belong to the commune. Protected by the Conservatoire du littoral, these wetlands include the Barlatier bird reserve. The drive covers 13 km and takes around 19 minutes. Fixed fares: €21 in Eco, €30 in a saloon or €50 in a van, tolls and luggage included. Your driver will be holding a name board in arrivals.
Black Virgin and the Three Brothers
For a view over the whole area, the Black Virgin statue on its headland has a viewpoint indicator. Near La Mède cove, the ‘Trois Frères’ are a cluster of rocks rising from the lagoon. Staying in seaside Carry-le-Rouet or Sausset-les-Pins next door? Booking works the same way, and the ride back to the airport costs the same as the way in.
Good to know about Châteauneuf-les-Martigues
A memorial honours Henri Fabre, who flew the world’s first seaplane. In the south of the commune, the Saut and Valtrède valleys in the Nerthe hills hide a cave, a pierced rock and limestone needles.
