A Côte Bleue seaside resort
Between Marseille and Martigues, Carry-le-Rouet is a lively resort in summer. It has a marina, a picturesque fishing harbour, clear-water beaches, sheltered coves and plenty of water sports. It is also surprisingly green: of its 1,007 hectares, only 270 are built up, and the rest is a large wooded reserve. Divers come for its many underwater sites. In summer the town is at its busiest.
Allow three-quarters of an hour
The journey is 19 km but takes around 46 minutes, so settle in. The price is fixed in advance and does not change with traffic or time of day: €31 in Eco, €37 in a saloon, €50 in a van. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board and loads the bags, with tolls included. There is no night or weekend surcharge.
Dive, swim, look around
The Côte Bleue marine park protects an 85-hectare reserve here where all fishing is banned, mainly to safeguard the posidonia seagrass beds. Bringing dive gear? Pick the van for extra space. The Eaux-Salées viaduct, a monumental structure on the Côte Bleue railway, can be seen from the shore. Sausset-les-Pins and Ensuès-la-Redonne are right next door. The return to the airport costs the same as the way in.
Good to know about Carry-le-Rouet
The chapel of Le Rouet, first built in 1353 and rebuilt twice, looks out over Marseille bay. Fernandel lived in Carry for much of his life, and his bust is on display; Nina Simone spent her final years here.
