Goat cheese country above the sea
Le Rove lies in the Nerthe hills between L’Estaque and Ensuès-la-Redonne. The village stretches along a hollow 110 to 170 metres up, ringed by bare limestone slopes. This is the home of brousse du Rove, a fresh cheese made from the milk of the local Rove goat breed, which grazes out on the hillsides. Towards the coast, narrow valleys lead down to the inhabited coves of La Vesse and Niolon.
Winding roads, half an hour
The journey is only 14 km but takes around 28 minutes, because the hills mean twisting roads, especially on the way down to the coves through the Régadzi valley. Your driver knows the final stretch, so all you need to provide is the address. The price does not depend on time: €30 in Eco, €40 in a Sedan or €50 in a van, tolls and luggage included.
Sunday in Niolon
The coves of Niolon and La Vesse, about 5 km from the village, each have a small harbour and fishing hamlet, and on Sundays they fill with people from Marseille. Arriving at a weekend? Book ahead. If you plan to walk, be aware that the coastal path towards La Redonne is unmarked and tricky in places, so proper shoes are a must.
Good to know about Le Rove
Niolon station, standing 35 metres above the cove, has the tall, narrow, tile-trimmed style typical of the Côte Bleue line. The Camp de Laure, a fortified prehistoric settlement, is a listed monument, and the 13th-century Romanesque chapel of Saint-Michel de Gignac actually stands in Le Rove despite its name.
