Berre-l’Étang spreads across the plain at the mouth of the river Arc, on the eastern side of a headland separating the small Étang de Vaïne from the main lagoon. The right bank is farmland: drained by canals, it made Berre France’s leading area for greenhouse fruit and vegetables from the 1970s to the 2000s. The left bank is taken up by the petrochemical site, which covers some 800 hectares around the town.
