A village beneath the Étoile range

Simiane-Collongue stretches along a valley below the Pilon du Roi, on the northern slope of the Étoile range. The village is overlooked by the castrum rock and its 13th-century Saracen tower, also called the clock tower, with views over the ridges, the old mining spoil heap and Mont Sainte-Victoire. The town hall occupies the 18th-century Château de Simiane, and an archaeology museum shows prehistoric finds from the commune.

Around the Étoile, not over it

Marseille is next door, but no road crosses the Étoile directly, so Simiane is reached via the A51 or the D 7. From the airport the drive is 26 km and takes around 25 minutes. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. Fixed fares: €42 in Eco, €49 in a saloon, €65 in a van, tolls and luggage included.

Tuesday and Saturday market days

The farmers’ market runs on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, a good reason to arrive early or plan a stop before handing back your rental keys. For walkers, four marked trails start in the commune, including the clock tower path and the Canyon loop. Bouc-Bel-Air and Mimet are the neighbours, and the return journey costs the same. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before.

Good to know about Simiane-Collongue

From the Pilon du Roi (711 m) and the Col Sainte-Anne (591 m) you can see Marseille bay on one side and the Aix countryside on the other. The massif is a Natura 2000 site, and Nina Simone lived here for eight years before moving to Carry-le-Rouet.
