The highest village in the Bouches-du-Rhône

With its town hall at 497 metres and a summit at 779 metres, the Tête du Grand Puech, Mimet is the highest village in the département. The Étoile range splits it in two. The wild southern side looks out over Marseille, its bay and the sea, while the northern slope, wooded with oak and pine, holds the village, its 11th-century Transfiguration church and the homes.

Up from Gardanne on the RD 7

The trip is 29 km and takes around 26 minutes. The RD 7 climbs from Gardanne to Mimet and, on a clear day, offers glimpses of Mont Ventoux, the Luberon and the Montagne de Lure. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board. Fixed fares: €47 in Eco, €56 in a saloon and €74 in a van, tolls and luggage included.

Winter at altitude

On the northern slope winters are cold and damp, especially in the valley, so pack warm clothes if you arrive between December and February. From the Col Sainte-Anne you can even see the Écrins. Before you leave, look out for the old bakery from the 1953 Fernandel film Le Boulanger de Valorgue, shot here; it still has its sign.

Good to know about Mimet

On Chemin Saint-Joseph, a 17th-century ice house 12 metres deep, holding 300 m³, once supplied Marseille with ice. In the hamlet of Les Moulières, the headframe of the Gérard pit recalls the days of coal mining.
