Three hubs and a sweet tooth

Allauch, pronounced roughly ‘a-low’, is home to more than 21,000 people, 12 km from central Marseille. Life is spread between three hubs, the Village, Le Logis-Neuf and La Pounche, with around a hundred shops, bars and restaurants between them. The town is known for its treats: black or white nougat, hard casse-dents biscuits and honey sweets called chiques. The Jarret river runs through, as do the Canal de Provence and the Canal de Marseille. In December, the Christmas market showcases santons, pottery and ironwork.

Why the drive takes about 45 minutes

Allauch is 36 km from Marseille Provence Airport by road and the journey takes about 45 minutes, because the route has to cross or skirt the Marseille urban area. Your driver follows your flight, meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and waits up to an hour for free. The indicative price per vehicle includes tolls and luggage: €58 Eco, €68 Sedan, €95 van, with no night or weekend surcharge.

Pick the right drop-off

The Village, Le Logis-Neuf and La Pounche are separate areas, so say which one you need or give your hotel’s full address. Allauch has a few hotels, holiday cottages and furnished rentals, but no municipal campsite. If you are coming for the Christmas market, book your return to the airport early; it costs the same as the way in. Plan-de-Cuques is right next door.

Good to know about Allauch

Allauch’s craftspeople have made nougat, casse-dents and chiques for around a hundred years. The La Chips d’Allauch crisp brand is produced in the Fontvieille business park. One local family also makes raw-milk goat’s cheeses.
