Two villages and a Roman temple

The commune is made up of two villages, Vernègues and Cazan, on the Grand Puech plateau at 352 m, about 10 km from Salon-de-Provence. Above today’s village, Vieux-Vernègues was wrecked by the 1909 earthquake and still shows the ruins of its castle and the old Church of Saint-Jacques. Near Cazan, the Château-Bas site keeps the remains of a listed Roman temple next to the Saint-Cézaire chapel. A viewpoint table on the plateau looks out over the whole area.

The ride from Marseille Provence

Vernègues is 35 km from the airport by road, about 39 minutes. Prices cover the whole vehicle and include tolls and luggage: €56 Eco, €67 Sedan and €93 van, unchanged at night and at weekends. When you land, your driver, who has followed your flight, will be in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign, and the first hour after landing is free.

Village or Cazan?

The two villages are separate, so say whether you are staying in Vernègues, in Cazan or near Château-Bas. Above the Cazan plain you will spot the 1,416 m viaduct carrying the Paris–Marseille high-speed line. If you plan to walk up to Vieux-Vernègues and the viewpoint, bring sturdy shoes, as the old village is a ruin explored on foot. Aurons, Alleins and Lambesc are the nearest neighbours, each reached in the same way.

Good to know about Vernègues

The painter Henry de Groux is buried in Vernègues cemetery. The village has several old wash houses, including those of Naud, La Teulière and Les Lambert. The priory and chapel of Saint-Symphorien stand on the road to Cazan.
