Cézanne’s mountain above the vines

Below Puyloubier, more than 1,000 hectares of vines carry the Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire label, the largest vineyard in the département. The village itself faces south on the lower slopes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, at around 400 m, and can be seen from far away. Above it, the limestone ridge made famous by Cézanne rises to 1,011 m at the Pic des Mouches. The old centre has been carefully restored with paved lanes and renovated façades, and 80 m of ramparts on the west side have been rebuilt.

To the far east of the département

Puyloubier lies at the eastern tip of the Bouches-du-Rhône, about 20 km from Aix. The drive from the airport is roughly 48 km and takes about 40 minutes. Indicative fares per vehicle: €77 in Eco, €91 in a Sedan or €127 in a van, with tolls and luggage included, even late at night or on a Sunday. The driver tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals with a name sign, with a free hour of waiting.

Wine tasting without the car keys

Coming for the wine usually means visiting several estates. Rather than driving after a tasting, book your ride back to the airport from the cellar door or your accommodation; it costs the same as the outward journey. Neighbouring villages are Rousset, Saint-Antonin-sur-Bayon, Vauvenargues and Pourrières. Puyloubier covers 4,085 hectares, 2,300 of them within the Grand Site Sainte-Victoire. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up.

Good to know about Puyloubier

Since 1954 the French Foreign Legion has run a home for its veterans on the Captain Danjou estate east of the village. Residents tend 40 hectares of vines and work in pottery and bookbinding workshops. The Latin name Podium Luperium meant ‘hill of the wolves’.
