The main town of the Pays d’Aigues
Pertuis takes its name from the Latin for a gap or passage, and it has always been a crossroads between the coast and the mountains. Today it is the main town of the Pays d’Aigues, home to almost 20,000 people about 20 km north of Aix-en-Provence, and a member of the Luberon regional nature park. Visitors come on business, to explore the Luberon villages or for local produce: Pertuis potatoes, cherries, olive oil and wine.
The view as you arrive
The drive is about 50 km and takes some 43 minutes. Coming up from Aix, just past Venelles, Pertuis appears below in its valley, with the steep south face of the Luberon behind it, topped by the Mourre Nègre at 1,125 m. Per-vehicle fares start at €72 in Eco, €86 in a Sedan or €119 in an 8-seater van, tolls and luggage included. Your driver follows your flight and meets you in arrivals with a name sign, with an hour of free waiting.
Heading on to La Tour-d’Aigues or Ansouis
Pertuis is often a stepping stone to the villages of the Pays d’Aigues. Its direct neighbours are La Tour-d’Aigues, La Bastidonne, Ansouis and Meyrargues; if you are staying in one of them, give the address for an exact fare. When you leave, the ride back to the airport costs the same as the way in, with no surcharge for evenings, nights or weekends. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pick-up.
Good to know about Pertuis
The fertile plain of Pertuis, about 2,000 hectares, follows the Durance for 11 km and is protected from floods by nine large dykes. Long known as a potato capital, the town saw a brotherhood devoted to the Pertuis potato founded in 2008. The Durance once formed the border between the counties of Provence and Forcalquier.
