Where Cézanne came to paint

Le Tholonet lies on the doorstep of Aix-en-Provence at the foot of Montagne Sainte-Victoire. The Route Cézanne, which the painter travelled to work outdoors, crosses the north of the commune and leads to the mountain’s visitor sites; it has been protected since 1959. Along the way you will find the château, built around 1470 and restored in the 17th century, an old windmill now used as an exhibition space, and remains of a Roman aqueduct that once supplied Aix.

Good to know about Le Tholonet

Le Tholonet marble, known as brèche d’Alep, was quarried at Roques Hautes and used in grand Aix townhouses and royal châteaux. The château once had a theatre built for Émilie de Marignane, wife of the orator Mirabeau. Traces of the Roman Via Aurelia survive along the southern edge of the commune.
