Art inside the château

Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, whose residents are still called Nègreliens after the old name Négrel, fills a neat 6 km by 2.5 km rectangle between the Cengle plateau and the River Arc. Its château houses the town hall, the library and the Arteum museum, open since 1990, which shows around a hundred works by Marseille and regional artists plus a recreation of the painter Arsène Sari’s studio. Vines of the Côtes-de-provence Sainte-Victoire appellation surround the village.

Straight off the A8 at junction 32

The A8 motorway serves the commune directly at junction 32, and the old Route Nationale 7 crosses it from east to west. From Marseille Provence Airport it is 37 km, about 28 minutes. Tolls are included in the vehicle price, as is luggage: from €59 Eco, €70 Sedan, €98 8-seater van. Your driver follows your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and gives you a free hour.

Heading back to the airport

When you leave, the journey to the airport is booked at the same price as your arrival, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. With the motorway so close, early departures are easy to arrange: just give your flight time and address. Fuveau, Beaurecueil, Saint-Antonin-sur-Bayon and Rousset are neighbouring villages served the same way. A pre-dawn pick-up costs exactly the same as one in the afternoon.

Good to know about Châteauneuf-le-Rouge

A Roman stone once marked the boundary between the lands of Arles and Aix here. Until fairly recently the local economy was based on olives, cereals, vines and sheep. A bronze statue of the Virgin stands opposite the town hall.
