Luberon trails and Waldensian history

Hikers come to Mérindol for the Petit Luberon, whose limestone slopes rise behind the village to 620 m, while wine lovers seek out its Côtes-du-Luberon bottles. The village overlooks the Durance plain on the border between the Vaucluse and the Bouches-du-Rhône. Its past is sombre: resettled by Waldensians from 1504, it was attacked in 1545 by a military expedition that killed hundreds. The ruins of the old castrum are a listed archaeological site, and a clock belfry dates from the later 17th century.

From the airport to the Luberon

The drive is about 49 km and takes roughly 41 minutes. The D 973 crosses the commune from west to east, and the A7 motorway is reached at Sénas, 12 km away. The fare, set per vehicle, is €78 in Eco, €93 in a Sedan or €130 in a van, with tolls and luggage included. Late arrivals and weekends cost the same. Your driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name sign, giving you an hour of free waiting.

Eco-energy fair weekend

Since 1999 Mérindol has hosted an eco-energy fair over one weekend at the end of September; it is the village’s biggest event, so book early if you are coming then. The suspension bridge across the Durance connects Mérindol with Mallemort, and Puget, Cheval-Blanc and Alleins are the other neighbours. The return run to the airport is charged at the same price as the outward journey, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Good to know about Mérindol

The mid-18th-century parish church of Sainte-Anne has been a listed building since 1984. François Villiers shot part of his 1956 film L’Eau vive in Mérindol. Thanks to irrigation from the Durance, farming remains an important part of the local economy.
